Our Avowed Purpose

According to the Constitution and Bylaws of our church,

The Avowed purpose of this Church shall be to worship God, to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, to celebrate the sacraments of Holy Communion and Baptism, to realize Christian fellowship and unity within this Church and the Church Universal, to render fellowship and service toward the whole human family, and to strive for righteousness, justice and peace.

The shorthand for all of this, I think, is “Live a Life of Love,” which is our mission statement/mantra.

I’ve got to say, I am pretty excited about being part of a church like this one.

I am pretty excited to be part of a church that aspires to be about these kinds of things. I hope you are too!

I think it would be worthwhile to spend a little time thinking about the purpose of our church. Not only so we can celebrate it, but also so we can understand it and embrace it—to let it seep in and become a part of us. What does it mean to have an “avowed purpose” anyway? What does it mean to “render fellowship and service toward the whole human family”?

Take a moment now and re-read that “avowed purpose.” What resonates with you? What inspires you?

Why don’t we spend a little time together with our “purpose”?

On July 31st, right after our 10am service, I’m going to host a gathering in the Fireside Room (yes, there will be snacks). It’ll be a bible study centered on understanding our purpose and our mission. I hope you’ll join us!
