Finding Hope in the Darkness: A Blue Christmas Service at First Congregational Church of Ramona

As the holiday season draws near, many look forward to the joy and celebration of Christmas. Yet, for some, this time of year can be a reminder of loss, grief, or hardship. In recognition of this, First Congregational Church of Ramona invites you to a Blue Christmas Worship Service on Tuesday, December 17th, at 5:00 p.m.

What is a Blue Christmas Service?

The concept of Blue Christmas services originated in the late 20th century, often linked to liturgical practices in the Anglican and United Methodist traditions. Sometimes called “Longest Night” services, these gatherings offer a quiet, contemplative space for those who find the holiday season difficult. Whether due to the loss of a loved one, personal challenges, or simply the weight of life’s struggles, these services acknowledge that not everyone feels festive during Christmas.

The name "Blue Christmas" reflects both the melancholy emotions some experience and the liturgical color blue, symbolizing hope in the Christian tradition. These services provide a sacred time to bring sorrow and grief before God, holding them in tension with the hope and light of Christ's coming.

What to Expect at First Congregational Church’s Blue Christmas Gathering

Our Blue Christmas service will be a time of prayer, reflection, and hope, creating space for honest acknowledgment of life's difficulties amidst the holiday season. Together, we will:

  • Offer prayers for healing and peace.

  • Reflect on the light of Christ in the midst of darkness.

  • Find comfort in the shared presence of others.

Whether you are carrying burdens from this past year or simply longing for a quieter, more contemplative way to experience Advent, we welcome you to come as you are.

This meaningful gathering is designed to remind us that, even in the midst of sorrow, we are not alone. God meets us where we are, offering the promise of Emmanuel—“God with us.”

Join Us

We hope you will join us for this special service on December 17th at 5:00 p.m. in our Sanctuary. Bring your burdens, your hopes, and your heart as we seek God’s presence together in this sacred space.
