The original authors of the Bible, particularly the authors of the Hebrew Scriptures, didn’t just make up the idea of “the divine.” Their understanding of God was developed in the context of an Ancient Near Eastern world that had lots of “gods” and various understandings of divinity. In encountering Yahweh, our God, the first authors of the Bible struggled to understand this God’s relationship to all the gods of Mesopotamia.
In this study, lead by John Stevenson, we will learn about the “first family” of gods in the ancient world and how it influenced the Bible’s descriptions of God’s action in the world. If you’re curious about how Yahweh was unique from the gods of the ancient world or why God is sometimes referred to as plural in the Bible (i.e. “let us make humankind in our image” Genesis 1)… OR if you’re just generally interested in learning about the Bible, growing in your faith and understanding, then this study is for you!
